The retired President of Valparaiso University transformed VU into a nationally and internationally ranked university during the past 20 years. He demonstrated creativity in encouraging new and imaginative learning opportunities and raised more than $500 million for the university. The campus itself was transformed, creating an academically challenging and spiritually strong environment. His leadership enriched the educational experience of thousands of graduates by widening their horizons to include music, theater, and the arts. He is one of six university presidents who established the Indiana Campus Compact to encourage student engagement, now adopted statewide. The new “Harre Union” opening on campus in January, 2009 is named in his honor. The plaque and a $500 gift donated to VU are sponsored by ArcelorMittal.
